History
Formation of ALPENRIND Salzburg
The Salzburg slaughterhouse's history stretches back more than 80 years. It dates back to an initiative by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management in 1930, when livestock exchanges were established by the livestock breeding departments ofthe main agricultural bodies in the Austrian provinces. The company that existed back then was the predecessor ofthe modern-day ALPENRIND-salzburg.
1930
Initially, the Salzburg slaughterhouse is not responsible for commercial activities. Rather, it focuses solely on supporting livestock distribution. The breeding organizations are responsible for sales promotion and consignment. A potential marketer, however, is still missing. The first steps towards forming a livestock processing co-operative are taken in Kuchl, in the Tennengau region of Salzburg. Johann Siller, a farmer in Kuchl, initially organizes the sale of livestock from the slaughterhouse.
1946
Salzburger Viehvermarktungs reg. Gen.m.b.H. is founded. Sales by the co-operative members are Iimited to the local area. The co-operative is therefore quite small. An agency for slaughter cattle is established at the slaughterhouse; slaughterhouses are founded in Kuchl and Hallein. Before long, the co-op is represented at auctions and at all important cattle, horse and foal markets. It becomes a major player in the breeding and sales economies of the Alpine foothills.
1948
2,660 beef cattle, pigs and calves are being brokered already, and 2,276 head of slaughter cattle are brought to market; plus 1,546 head of productive livestock.
1950-1960
In co-operation with the Livestock Association in Vienna, a commercial barn is bought in Ziegeleistraße, Salzburg. From this point onwards, productive livestock sales far exceed those of slaughter cattle. Efforts are made to combat TBC and BANG (an extinct cattle disease with a similar progression to TBC).
1962
Due to the difficult economic times, Raiffeisenverband Salzburg (RVS) is forced to take over the livestock processing co-operative and to manage it as one of its own departments.
1968
The old slaughterhouse at Gebirgsjägerplatz in the city of Salzburg is demolished and the council sets up the new plant on a city-owned plot of land in Bergheim. The remaining land is acquired by RVS, which initiates the development of an administration and stable building (for around 200 cattle),
along with premises for pig and veal sales and appropriate refrigeration facilities with butchering space.
1975
FLEIWA (the central administration body for meat products) is founded. It is responsible for the entire commercial activities of meat and meat products, along with the management of the connected cutting plant. An auction hall is built alongside the Agricultural Center in Tamsweg/Lungau and another one is built in St. Johann/Pongau. The commercial opportunities available to farmers are thereby significantly improved.
1981
The Salzburg livestock processing co-operative sells 25,772 head in Austria and 4,000 head abroad. 3,500 head of slaughter cattle are processed from Salzburg, of which 2,200 head are from the Salzburg livestock processing co-operative.
1986
Salzburg City Council sells the market hall, which comes as a surprise. It is subsequently bought by the Raiffeisenverband and a group of livestock traders.
1989
The city council sells the slaughterhouse to Raiffeisenverband Salzburg.
1993
The current standard ist not sufficiently adequate to be recognized by the EU, so the slaughterhouse is rebuilt at a cost of EUR 7,27 million.
1999
Additional cold rooms are built in order to meet growing demand.
2000
More cold rooms are built during the BSE crisis in order to fulfill the strict storage regulations. All cattle older than 30 months are required to undergo a BSE test. The meat can only be delivered after the test results have been made available.
2004
The expansion of the cutting facilities begins.
2005
Start of operations in the new cutting department and introduction of the "ALPENRIND Salzburg" brand.
2007
Raiffeisenverband Salzburg (RVS) leases the slaughterhouse to the new operator, OSI International Holding GmbH, now OSI EUROPE FOODWORKS GMBH.
2008
Assumption of regional and international commercial activities in Traunstein and intergration into the OSI International Group. The ALPENRIND brand is relaunched as "ALPENRIND Salzburg" and "ALPENRIND Bayern".
2009
The company changes its name to ALPENRIND GMBH. It has its head office in Bergheim and a facility in Traunstein
